Era is a Spanish word used to designate a circular surface paved with stone located in a windy area. They were used by farmers for threshing (separating the grain from the chaff and the straw) and wind winnowing (tossing the harvested material into the air, causing the chaff to blow away while the heavier grain falls to the ground).
Due to the decline in agriculture in the Alpujarra, most of these Eras have been abandoned and have fallen into disrepair.
